With 2011 (a.k.a. the year of Skyrim) behind us, it’s time to start looking forward to the great games that will define 2012. From the apocalypse and killer fungi to floating cities and foul-mouthed fourth graders, here are eight titles to look forward to over the coming months.

Borderlands 2 – Gearbox’s Borderlands was arguably the sleeper hit of 2010. The RPG/shooter dynamic, solid art style and four player co-op play made it a genre-bending standout, propelling it to many critics’ “best of” lists despite some heavy competition and rough edges here and there. The sequel seems to have smoothed out several fan complaints that surrounded the first, as well as introducing a branching quest/player choice dynamic, and all the while maintaining the things that made the original so much fun to play. For many co-op shooter fans out there, September cannot get here fast enough.

Darksiders 2 – Vigil Games seemed to come out of left field with their first game, Darksiders, which was published by THQ in early 2010. The game went on to moderate success- enough so that THQ saw fit to publish a sequel. This new game is twice as big as the first, and now features side quests and multiple quest hubs. Fans of God of War-esque battle systems and Zelda-like weapon and accessory upgrade based upon level progression should be sure to keep an eye out for this one in June.

Mass Effect 3 – Mass Effect 3 is the third (duh), and supposedly final (we’ll see) installment in Bioware’s space opera. Fans of the first two titles are likely chomping at the bit for EA’s March 6th release. For those unfamiliar with the first two games, you can expect characters and a story on par with almost any other sci-fi franchise in existence. Commander Shepherd’s story in his/her quest to protect the denizens of the universe from the imminent Reaper threat is truly deserving of the term epic.

The Last of Us – Naughty Dog, the studio responsible for the Uncharted franchise, are taking their Hollywood-caliber production values to the survival horror genre with their next release. Players will guide protagonists Joel and Ellie through a post-apocalyptic world decimated by a strange and deadly fungus. You know Naughty Dog is serious with their 2012 holiday release, though, since they’ve upgraded from Uncharted‘s Nathan Drake’s half-tuck look to new hero Joel’s full untuck.

Bioshock Infinite – Although Irrational Games recently had to bump Infinite from a Q1 release to Q3, at least it is still slated for 2012. For now anyway. Honestly though, would you have it any other way? After the job they did in crafting the underwater city of Rapture, Ken Levine and company deserve to take as much time as they need to create the floating city of Columbia. I’d rather have a finished project than a rushed one, and if the previous two games in the series are any indication, when Levine says it’s done, Infinite will be nothing short of astounding.

South Park – From the Nintendo 64′s first person “shooter” to the more recent XBLA tower defense title, the quiet Colorado town has been a popular setting for developers in the past. However, this will be the first SP game to feature participation and writing from series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The game will be an RPG style adventure with the honest-to-goodness hand drawn and animated 2D graphics that give the show its iconic look. Be prepared to laugh out loud when this one releases in Q4.

The Last Guardian – Fumito Ueda and the rest of Team Ico revealed this PS3 exclusive at E3 way back in 2009. Although originally slated to release in 2011, it was subsequently pushed to 2012 to give Ueda and crew time to give the puzzle-based platformer the polish expected from the studio responsible for Shadow of the Colossus and Ico.

A Game of Thrones – George R. R. Martin’s “A Song of Fire and Ice” series of books has exploded into one of the hottest IP’s of the past year, generating everything from trading card and board games to a well-executed HBO show. European developer Cyanide and Japanese publisher Atlus look to capitalize on the franchise’s growing popularity with an RPG title due out this summer. If they craft the game with half the care Martin has given the books or HBO has given the show, this should be one to watch for.

Great, Scott! Whoa, this is heavy, Doc. Most people can tell you what movie these lines are from, and most can even pull off a Christopher Lloyd or Michael J. Fox impression while doing so. Of course the movie is Back to the Future. If you have shunned movies and general pop culture for the past 27 years, I suggest you go out and buy the trilogy on DVD or Blu-Ray immediately.

Are you telling me that you built a time machine … out of a DeLorean? Great, Scott! Whoa, this is heavy, Doc. Most people can tell you what movie these lines are from, and most can even pull off a Christopher Lloyd or Michael J. Fox impression while doing so. Of course the movie is Back to the Future. If you have shunned movies and general pop culture for the past 27 years, I suggest you go out and buy the trilogy on DVD or Blu-Ray immediately. You’ll laugh through the first one, chuckle at the second one, and probably stop about midway through the third film due to lack of interest. But, without a doubt, you will become a fan of the franchise and might want to pick up Back to the Future: The Game.

Back to the Future: The Game, available for the PS3 and Wii, starts out in 1986 with Doc being presumed dead after leaving for the past and never returning. Marty McFly, however, thinks differently. Shortly into the game, the DeLorean returns with Doc’s trusty dog Einsten, but Doc is nowhere to be found. Marty must travel back to 1931 to rescue Doc.

The plot is simple enough (written in part by the original franchise’s co-creator, co-writer and co-producer) and so is the gameplay. It’s essentially a point and click graphic adventure game. You interact with items and people by clicking on them. If it’s a person, you choose from a list of things to say to that person. If it’s an object, you either use the object or it’s added to your inventory to use later. Admittedly, this gets boring after the first 10 minutes. The obstacles you face and puzzles you need to solve in order to further the plot are also just ho-hum.

The game is broken up into five episodes (the game was originally released for the iPad, PC and PS3 as downloadable content). Despite being a fan of the films, I struggled getting through even the first episode. Don’t get me wrong, there are a couple of laugh-out-loud moments that evoke nostalgia for the original films (Who doesn’t like to see a member of the Tannen family getting covered in manure?). Plus it helps that Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc in the films, voices Doc in the game. And although Michael J. Fox doesn’t voice Marty McFly, a terrific voice actor named AJ LoCascio does a spot-on Michael J. Fox impression. These things don’t make Back to the Future: The Game good, however. Just more tolerable.

If you have some time to kill and have already beaten all of your other games, then I’d say check out Back to the Future: The Game. It’s more entertaining than the film Back to the Future III, but not nearly as inventive or clever as Back to the Future II. Actually, you know what, you’re probably just better off watching the original Back to the Future. So what are you waiting for? Why don’t you make like a tree and get out of here? Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need…roads. Yeah, well, history’s going to change.

No, seriously, watch Back to the Future.

I had the opportunity to go see the Cirque Du Soleil – Michael Jackson: The Immortal performance at the Scottrade Center on Wednesday, February 8th. I’ve been a fan of Cirque Du Soleil for a long time and was very excited to go see one of their performances accompanied by the music of one of my all-time favorite artists.

The talents of the individuals involved were absolutely incredible. The show performers were unbelievable, the band was dead on and the sound/stage crew provided a stunning back drop to what was happening with each and every song.

To go into detail of every performance wouldn’t do them justice. Several songs were often meshed into one hybrid performance that would be very difficult to convey to the reader. I will, however, pick my top three performances of the show. This, in no way shape or form, can replace actually seeing the show live. But since the show has now left St. Louis, this may be your only chance of being able to understand what you missed. If you watch the video link that is located here you can see some corresponding video from the show to go with my review.

Before I get to my top three favorite performances, I do feel some individual honorable mentions should briefly be mentioned.

There was one performer who only had one leg. This guy was amazing. He had more coordination with one leg than I have with two legs. See :40 in video.

They had an amazing cellist. She had a very sinister look to her as she performed. Kind of like once she played a classical piece for you, she would then stick the cello bow in your eye. See :30 in video.

The other performer worth mentioning, (gotta be careful here) did a routine using a pole. She was incredibly talented. See 1:01 in the video to see what she can do with no hands.

For my favorite performances:

Childhood – This was one of the opening numbers and it was actually quite emotional. It was done very well and made it difficult to not think about how different MJ’s childhood was from the rest of us. My favorite part of this was several entertainers came out with these large props. As they started to move their props around, it took the shape of a window. Then three other performers raised a large picture of a child’s face and two large hands. They moved it around as if the child was looking out the window at the other performers as they dangled from the rafters. It was beautiful. This is not included on the video above.

Smooth Criminal – This is one of my favorite MJ songs, so I may be a bit biased on this one. The performance seemed straight out of the video. It had the 1920’s gangster appearance with the dancing and the outfits. The dancers were great. I got my wish when they did the move where they angle their bodies to the ground. All the while sparks started shooting out of their jackets. This can be seen at 1:37 in the video.

Thriller – WOW!! All the performers came out onto the stage dressed as mummies, carcasses, and just the basic living dead. The backdrop was a cemetery scene complete with fog and ambience. They of course did the thriller dance as they marched out towards the center stage. We were in the fourth row right around the center stage and to see the makeup and showmanship from that close up was great. This by far was my favorite performance.

What an amazing show. After it was over, you could just feel the buzz in the air from the crowd. The evening was electric. Unfortunately, for some of us, this will be as close as we’ll ever get to see a show that truly captures Michael’s essence. I truly believe this is the next best thing to being lucky enough to have seen Michael Jackson live.

I wanted to do something a little different for this list, however: the 10 artists listed here aren't necessarily the best of 2011, and the albums they've released aren't necessarily the best of 2011. Heck, some of these artists didn't even release albums in 2011. This list is simply comprised of the artists most frequently played in the St. Charles Slackers over the course of 2011. These are the voices we occupied ourselves with the most these past 12 months, and whether they're the best (or worst) of what this year- or any other- has to offer, is up to you to decide.

With the close of each year, there are tons of “Best of the Year” lists to be had. I wanted to do something a little different for this list, however: the 10 artists listed here aren’t necessarily the best of 2011, and the albums they’ve released aren’t necessarily the best of 2011. Heck, some of these artists didn’t even release albums in 2011. This list is simply comprised of the artists most frequently played in the St. Charles Slackers over the course of 2011. These are the voices we occupied ourselves with the most these past 12 months, and whether they’re the best (or worst) of what this year- or any other- has to offer, is up to you to decide.

Drake – The Degrassi: The Next Generation actor turned hip-hop star found commercial and critical success with his breakout album Thank Me Later. November 2011′s release Take Care sees Drake exploring a smoother R&B sound, and it works. Although less aggressive, there are some quality beats here, and despite the fact that it was only out for six weeks of 2011, it garnered enough plays to get Drake on this list.

Taking Back Sunday – Although they released a self-titled album in June of 2011, the record of theirs that gets played in our store the most is still 2002′s Tell All Your Friends. The NY based outfit took a melodic hardcore sound and infused it with pop sensibilities, a recipe that they and scores of other bands still use to this day. While some of you hipsters might think the formula is stale, you cannot deny the hooks on Tell All Your Friends. They are just too big.

Dessa – Somewhat of an anomaly for a rapper, Dessa is a white girl from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her rhyming career started in the world of slam poetry, which set her on a path leading to her introduction to the Doomtree crew, the second largest indie hip-hop collective in the city. Up until now, Doomtree has always kind of lived in the shadow of their fellow Minnesota natives the Rhymesayers label. Dessa’s 2010 album A Badly Broken Code and her upcoming release due later this year look to change that.

Silversun Pickups – Their albums, Carnavas and Swoon, feature sweet melodies and big fuzzy guitars that make these guys a fun band to listen to. Their sound draws comparisons to bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and The Pixies, but they’re not pretenders. Strong collaborative song writing and Brian Aubert’s unique voice ensure they’re a band to watch over the coming years. They’re currently working on their third album which is scheduled to be released in the spring.

Kid Cudi – The Cleveland, Ohio born rapper got his start in the summer of 2008 when he released his first mix tape. It immediately caught Kanye West’s attention who featured Kid Cudi on a track from his 808s & Heartbreaks album later that same year. Kid Cudi’s albums Man on the Moon: The End of Day and Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager both get regular play in the store.

Lupe Fiasco – A card-carrying member of the so-called conscious hip-hop movement alongside artists such as Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and Common, Lupe Fiasco’s brand of hip-hop is smart, engaging, filled with social and cultural commentary and liberally peppered with anti-establishment subtext. His most recent album, Lasers, was released in March of 2011, and despite some heavy handed choruses it attained instant classic status.

Gaslight Anthem – One of the best new bands to come out of the latter half of the aughts, NJ based The Gaslight Anthem plays a refreshing brand of folky, heartland-tinged punk. If Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp and Tom Petty formed a Ramones tribute band, it would probably sound a lot like the Gaslight Anthem’s 2008 breakout album The 59 Sound. If you’re already a fan, you should check out singer/guitarist Brian Fallon’s other project, The Horrible Crowes.

Best Coast – Best Coast is made up of singer/songwriter Bethany Cosentino and multiple instrumentalist Bobb Bruno. At first their lo-fi surf rock sound has a breezy, lighthearted feel to it and it’s not hard to imagine it as the soundtrack to a romantic teen movie about two kids who meet on summer vacation. As the album comes to a close and you realize nearly every song Bethany has penned here is an opus on yearning and lost love/forbidden love/unrequited love/unspoken love, you realize that it could also be the perfect soundtrack to a stalker movie. Filmed on a beach.

The Black Keys – Akron, Ohio’s Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney formed a band in 2001 (one of the best bands to emerge in the past decade, in fact), and they call themselves The Black Keys. After over a decade of consistent, tough as nails blues rock, their music continues to impress. Roll over from 2010′s album Brothers, the release of El Camino in late 2011 and the strength of their back catalog made them one of the most frequently played artists in the St. Charles store.

Kanye West – With My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy having a late November 2010 release, it was still being played frequently well into 2011. Not to mention his four other platinum albums. Throw in a June 2011 release for Watch the Throne, his highly anticipated collaboration with Jay-Z, and it’s no wonder that Kanye West is frequently heard over the speakers in our store.

When I was nine years old, I stopped watching animated films. Suddenly, The Little Mermaid and The Chipmunk Adventure didn’t do it for me. I began watching films that normal children of my age would have fallen asleep to, like Chaplin, Broadcast News, and Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. It came as no big shock that I was an unpopular child, and fat to boot. Oh, and did I mention my big 80′s glasses? Yep, total nerd. That’s probably too much information, but I digress. My point is that since I was nine I’ve been picky when it comes to animated films of any kind. A couple of notable exceptions would be The Triplets of Belleville and The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Now I’m proud to add the 2009 Australian clay-animated movie Mary and Max to that list.

Mary (The Sixth Sense‘s Toni Collette) is a young, lonely girl living in Australia with her sherry-swigging mother and father who likes to spend his free time stuffing dead birds. Her eyes look like “muddy puddles.” She has an oddly-shaped dark birthmark (“looks like poo”) on her forehead. She has her hair cut by her father (who shouldn’t be allowed near a pair of scissors) so the family can save money. Mary is without any friends except for a pet rooster. In a quest to find out where babies come from (her grandfather told her that men found them at the bottom of beer mugs) and with no one to turn to, she randomly picks an address from an U.S. address book. Enter her American pen pal Max…

Max (Capote‘s Philip Seymour Hoffman) is in his forties, lives alone in a small apartment in New York, has mental problems and is morbidly obese (his favorite recipe is chocolate hot dogs). Despite his anxiety over this new situation he’s been thrown into, he responds to Mary’s letter because he, too, is lonely. A friendship of sorts develops and its ups and downs are chronicled in the film.

As previously mentioned, this is a clay-animated movie and it is gorgeous. The first couple minutes are set on Mary’s street in Australia and we take in Mary’s surroundings. Every single object is beautifully crafted and carefully detailed. During the movie, when the setting is Australia, the colors are somewhat subdued, but not to the point of being ugly. But when we are transported to New York, most everything is in black and white. Max’s view of the world, with all of its shades of gray, contrasts sharply with Mary’s somewhat more optimistic view of the world, which is shaded but with some light shining through.

If you couldn’t guess from my description so far, this is not a movie for kids. It deals with a lot of adult themes including sex, death, depression and failure. But you will laugh. The wit exhibited in scenes such as Max discussing his mental illness (“When I was young, I invented an invisible friend called Mr. Ravioli. My psychiatrist says I don’t need him anymore, so he just sits in the corner and reads.”) and Mary discussing her mother’s stand on Mary’s weight (“Mum says I am fat too and I’m growing up to be a heifer, which I think is a type of cow.”). Although you feel bad that they have both been dealt some pretty horrible cards, you’re also comforted by the fact that they can confide in and draw strength from each other.

For those who aren’t fans of animated films, I highly suggest you give Mary and Max a chance. It’s a great story and would only be 90 minutes of your life. I’d also highly recommend it for those who might have been fat, glasses-wearing nerds who just didn’t fit in as kids. This one’s definitely for you.

Record Label: Elektra/WEA
Release Date: October 24, 2011
Parental Advisory?: No

I’ve never been huge on dance music. Specifically electronic or techno dance music, although you will never see me ‘tearin’ it up’ in ‘da club’ to the latest pop stylings either. Fifteen years ago I would have said that the reason I dislike the house genre is because it lacked soul. That DJs don’t make music, because the real music is already on the record they’re spinning, and no amount of mixing or rearranging will qualify the output as a real original creation. Maybe my prejudice against electronica stems from this irrational, yet deep-seated idea that any recording artist whose main instrument is a computer or a record player is somehow cheating.

Today I’m a little older and a little wiser. In more recent years, I’ve learned that there is real talent in matching up beats and fills. There is especially talent required in the production of a toe-tapping hook. Justice (comprised of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay) is partially responsible for helping me come to these realizations. The French duo’s 2007 debut ‘†’, was a dance album filled with overwhelming bass lines and deep rumbling synths that managed to somehow stay light and poppy. Over the top of all the deep low ends were melodies heavily tinged with rock and indie sensibilities as well as a dash of disco. The result was a record that was met with a fair amount of critical acclaim, including Grammy nominations. It was also one of those rare electronic albums I connected with, so it was with some anticipation that I looked forward to their second studio album Audio, Video, Disco.

If the loud in your face-ness of ‘†’ is Justice’s garage rock take on dance, then Audio, Video, Disco is their prog rock statement. Right off the bat the duo’s debt to bands like Yes, Rush and Queen is apparent. In fact, one might even think the opening track is a long lost 1979 B-side from some premiere progressive rock band, at least right up to the 1:05 mark when the big sloppy beats kick in that is. That’s not to say that the illusion is destroyed at that point. The chest-rattling synths have been dialed back a bit on this sophomore effort, likely to accommodate, and keep from drowning out, the more complex melodies laid out on these tracks. Melodies that whisper names like Jethro Tull and King Crimson throughout the disc. Melodies that, at times, even border on the theatrical.

While their debut was more instrumental in nature, some of ‘†’s biggest standouts featured a vocal track. Namely “D.A.N.C.E.” and “TThhee Ppaarrttyy.” On AVD there’s even more emphasis on vocals, resulting in a somewhat mixed bag. When it works, it works well- as can be heard on the tracks “Ohio” and “On’n'on” where the vocals genuinely add something to the song. In the worst cases, the vocal arrangements fall flat, and at times even come off as borderline indulgent. Almost as if they were conceived merely to accentuate the prog rock bent of the album.

Much of the album sounds forced, and I think a lot of it does have to do with the progressive rock theme. Still, you do have to respect an artist that takes chances. While much of the scene has trended toward dubstep, it would have been all too easy for Justice to fall into that syrupy and sludgy sound. Instead, they not only buck the current trend, but risk alienating their core audience with some of the choices they made for the follow up to an award winning album.

Audio, Video, Disco may be successful as a counter statement regarding the condition of the scene. In much the same way as their debut’s thick, sloppy beats could have been seen as a counter to the antiseptic Daft Punk sound that dominated the mid-aughts. As an album however, it’s less successful. AVD does have its share of high watermarks, but is ultimately marred by the forced prog rock perspective, resulting in a somewhat uneven listening experience.

By Nancy

It wasn’t until maybe five years ago that I started paying attention to DVD commentaries. Ever since then I’ve been hooked. I’m always on the lookout for interesting commentaries, but here are some of my favorites so far:

1) Sideways

Movie: Miles (Paul Giamatti) takes Jack (Thomas Haden Church) to wine country in California to celebrate Jack’s last days as a bachelor before he gets married. Miles has plans for golf, fine food and, of course, copious amounts of wine. Jack has other plans in mind. Enter a waitress (Virginia Madsen) and a winery worker (Sandra Oh) and quickly the lies and deceit grow. Sideways was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Thomas Haden Church and Best Supporting Actress for Virgina Madsen, and won Best Adapted Screenplay.

Commentary: Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church should be in more movies together. Not just because their on-screen bromance is intoxicating, but mostly because any commentaries they might record would be absolutely hilarious. They take playful swipes at each other, but mostly at themselves. Giamatii often laments about his pudgy belly or the size of his nose while Church focuses on his craggy face or his “doughy middle.” It’s always nice to see celebrities not take themselves too seriously and these fellas certainly don’t.

Best fact revealed: After Miles finds out that his book has been rejected yet again by a publisher, he pops a couple of pills and heads into a wine-tasting. He becomes irate and eventually dumps a “spit bucket” over his head and drinks some of the wine and spit mixture. Before filming this scene, the director went around with the bucket and let all of the extras and crew members swish some wine around in their mouths and spit in the bucket. This is what Paul Giamatti drank in that scene.

2) Bubba Ho-Tep

Movie: Elvis is alive and living in a rundown retirement home. A mummy is on the loose, sucking souls from the elderly residents. Elvis, along with an African-American man claiming to be John F. Kennedy, must defeat this mummy in order to save their souls, as well as the rest of the residents.

Commentary: There are two commentaries to Bubba Ho-Tep. One is with director Don Coscarelli and star Bruce Campbell who plays Elvis. The other commentary, the better commentary, is the one with “The King.” Campbell stays in character for the entire duration of the commentary. The concept is that Elvis has been tracked down and informed about “this Bubba Ho-Tep” movie and has been asked to give his opinion of it in the form of a commentary. Elvis can’t seem to make heads or tails of the film (Is it an action movie? Drama? Comedy? Horror picture?). Throughout the commentary, Elvis gives “facts” about his own movie career, eats popcorn, takes phone calls and sips on herbal black tea. For anyone who watches Bubba Ho-Tep and wants to embrace Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley just a little bit more, I highly recommend this commentary.

Best “fact” revealed: Elvis claims that Jack Ruby, who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, once asked him to play at one of Ruby’s nightclubs. Due to a disagreement over money, the appearance never happened.

3) The Office Special Part Two

Episode: This is the second part to the Christmas episode/series finale of The Office. This is the British version, kids, not the Steve “That’s what she said” Carell version. In this episode, Dawn (the British version of Pam) and her fiance are coming back to the office after having spent several months in the United States. Will seeing Tim (British version of Jim) make her realize that their love was meant to be, or will the series end with a big question mark? No spoilers here.

Commentary: Ricky Gervais, who plays the smarmy boss David Brent, and Stephen Merchant provide this sole commentary for the entire series. Gervais and Merchant also co-wrote and co-directed the series together so they must have tons of insights into the show, right? Well, kind of. Mostly they poke fun at themselves and each other. They do try to throw in a little nugget of trivia every now and then, but usually it’s like, “Hey, Ricky, remember when we filmed this and it was summer?” “Yeah, everyone was sweltering in those winter coats because it was supposed to be a Christmas episode.” Of course, they said it funnier than that.

Best fact revealed: Neither Ricky Gervais or Stephen Merchant like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Merchant claims that he feels that nine hours of his life was “wasted,” while Gervais quips, “If you’ve seen one orc, you’ve seen them all.”

4) Evil Dead II

Movie: Yes, I picked another Bruce Campbell movie, but it’s a classic. This movie picks up where the first Evil Dead left off (sort of). Ash (Bruce Campbell) is still battling the evil forces that live in the woods and terrorize him in the cabin. But Ash is not alone. Eventually four other people join him for this hilariously gory bloodbath. Oh, and there’s a book bound in human flesh and written in blood that they must use to defeat the evil that possesses them. Cool, huh?

Commentary: We’ve got actor Bruce Campbell, director/writer Sam Raimi (who grew up with Campbell in Michigan and made movies with him starting when they were just teens), co-writer Scott Spriegel, and special make-up effects artist Greg Nicotero. The real fun in this commentary is hearing Campbell and Raimi bicker and make fun of each other all in the name of friendship.

Best fact revealed: There are many facts and interesting tidbits throughout the whole commentary, but I’d say that Bruce Campbell’s story about Kurt Russell that correlates with the infamous “Work shed” scene is my favorite. In Evil Dead II, there is a scene where Ash is battling a possessed decapitated head when he suddenly turns and mutters, “Work shed.” It’s obvious that this audio has been dubbed and seems to be louder than what was probably originally intended. It sticks out like a sore thumb with a nasty, hairy Band-Aid on it. Years later while on the set of Escape From L.A., Kurt Russell approached him and said, “Say, ‘Work shed.’” Campbell was utterly confused until Russell started laughing and said that his son loved Evil Dead II and that he always got a kick out of the slightly out of place muttering of, “Work shed.” Campbell, of course, was embarrassed and in the commentary blames Raimi for the ridicule.
