Atoms for Peace- Amok

Posted on 13, May

Though Atoms for Peace might sound like some kind of Bono-spearheaded campaign to help war-torn countries, it’s actually the name of a band, one of the latest in a string of side projects put together by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Amok is their first album together, and although it’s not quite a concept album, it does have a sort of running theme.

Injustice: Gods Among Us

In 2008 a very strange fighting game called Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was released. Although it was a sloppy title, it proved one undeniable fact: playing as a superhero in a fighting game rocks. While playing, I found myself wishing that there weren’t any Mortal Kombat characters in the title- I don’t have a problem with them per se; it’s just that Sub-Zero can’t hold a candle to Batman. Luckily, I got my wish this year with Injustice: Gods Among Us, from NetherRealm Studios. I’m pleased to say that this game is incredibly true to the characters and even though the storyline was very short, it was still a blast to progress through.

Gears of War: Judgement

Posted on 2, Apr

I have quite a history with the Gears of War franchise. I’ve purchased all of them at midnight, played countless matches over Xbox Live and even almost shed a tear during a certain character’s death in Gears of War 3. Sure, this franchise isn’t for everyone but it is good ole fashioned fun. This time around, you aren’t playing as Marcus Fenix but as the sarcastic and dry Damon Baird and his Kilo squad. Does this Gears of War prequel hold a candle to the previous titles? Short answer: yes, and it’s bloody fun.

Since its release in 2000, its popularity has spawned well over a dozen expansions, mini-expansions and spinoffs, not to mention multiple digital incarnations on PC, iOS and others. Carcassonne is also available as an Xbox Live Arcade game.

Asura’s Wrath

Asura’s Wrath is a genre-defying video game developed by CyberConnect2, and published by Capcom. CC2 is probably best known for their work on the dotHack and the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja franchises. Here they’ve crafted a stylish and over-the-top revenge tale, loosely based in Hindu and Buddhist mythologies but with a sci-fi bent. It’s also one of the most underrated titles of 2012.

Tomb Raider

I’ve been playing video games most of my life and the one character I couldn’t ever see the merit of was Lara Croft. Sure, I owned the first game for the original PlayStation but I just hated the character. She was one dimensional and incredibly fake, and never seemed like a heroine anyone could really care about. This all changes with Crystal Dynamics’ reboot of the franchise- not since Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston have I actually cheered for a character this much. Tomb Raider is also the first triple A title for 2013.
